I caught an article titled “The Power of Catalytic Philanthropy” from Bill Gates’s Twitter Feed. Bill and Melinda see the role of philanthropy to be a fill-in where neither markets nor governments trod, or as he puts it, “to do work in a world beyond reach of market forces.” Gates recognizes the limitations of both Capitalism and governments without disparaging their necessary and potentially powerful, positive roles or either.
